This section will provide a brief description of the programs and activities conducted by the Recreation Department. It also provides a summary of the other activities which our department sponsors in whole or in part.

For use of the Recreation Complex, a small registration fee will be charged to members, who will receive a photo I.D. card that they must present when entering the building. This card will entitle the member to the use of all the recreation equipment, the gym, weight room and game room facilities. A small fee will be charged for programs that have an instructor. An adult must accompany a child under the age of 12 (both must have ID cards) when not participating in an adult-supervised activity.

If there are any activities in which you are interested, but do not appear here, please inform the Recreation Department. If you feel that you can help with any programs such as basketball, wrestling, tennis, soccer, etc., please call the Recreation office at 201-797-2640.

Summer Spray Grounds - A brightly-colored concrete splash pad from which water shoots out of features installed within the splash pad. The water enters into a drain and will be reused through a recycling filtration system. There is no standing water, making it safe for all ages. Family and individual passes will be sold at the Recreation Complex office. Open July through September.

Weight Room - This room contains an exercise bike, treadmill, stepper, Life Fitness machine, free weights and various Olympic barbells, plates, and benches. This room will be open from 9:00am - 12:00noon Mon.-Fri., and 3:00pm - 9:00pm Mon.-Fri., Sat. 9:00am - 3:00pm. Open to adults and students. Closed Sat. July and August.

Game Room - This room is used by both students and adults. It is open Monday through Friday. The game room has ping-pong and pool tables, soccer game tables, video games, and basketball "Shoot for Time". It also has a lounge area with vending machines and checkerboard tables and TV. Open Mon.-Fri. 6:00pm - 9:00pm.

Craft Room - Arts and crafts classes are held in the evenings for students. Room also has a TV and VCR. This room is also used for the Summer Day Camp and Extended Day Care Programs.

Gymnasium - 60’ x 94’ facility includes basketball court and an indoor tennis court. Open gym for basketball Mon.-Fri. 3:00pm - 9:00pm., Saturdays Sept. through June 9:00am - 3:00pm. Except during Nov 15 - March 15, Tues. and Thurs. only 7:00-9:00pm.

Senior Lounge - Area for seniors to relax and enjoy. Card tables, lounge chairs, TV, pool tables. Open all year round Mon.-Fri. 9:00am - 3:00pm.


Holiday Events

Easter Egg Hunt - For all Elmwood Park children. The hunt will be held at Boro Field on the Saturday before Easter at 8:00am. Prizes will be awarded to those finding a chick or bunny. All will receive chocolate bunnies. In case of rain, the egg hunt will be held inside the Recreation Gym.

Halloween Contest - For all Elmwood Park children ages 1 through 12. The contest will be held at 6:00pm in the Recreation Complex gym. Date to be announced. Candy will be given to all that wear costumes. Special prizes will be awarded for outstanding costumes.

Tree Lighting & Pictures with Santa - Santa arrives on fire truck. Pictures with Santa, light refreshments served. Held one week before Christmas. Date to be announced.


Summer Activities

Summer Day Camp - A 7-week day camp program is offered to all Elmwood Park children grades 1 through 9. The program begins the Monday after school ends and finishes 3rd week in August. A complete listing of the Day Camp schedule with dates, activities, and specific trips will be available in the Recreation Complex. Program runs Monday through Friday from 9:00am - 3:00pm. Children may bring lunch or purchase lunch.

Camp Location - Camp is held at two areas: the Boro Field and Recreation Building for participants entering 4th - 9th grade, and Gilbert Avenue School and playground for participants entering 1st - 3rd grade. Children will be divided in age groups and supervised by at least one certified teacher along with assistants.

Registration and Activities - Registration will be held in the Recreation Complex; dates and prices to be announced. Price includes use of Spray Ground during camp, bus pick-up before 9:00am and drop-off after 3:00pm. Upon registration, parents will receive a handbook describing the camp activities and trips. The children will receive a camp T-shirt and a gift.

Extended Day Care in Summer - Program runs in the summer from first day of camp to last day. Program will be held in the Recreation Complex from 3:00pm - 6:00pm from Monday - Friday.

Trips - TRIPS HAVE SEPARATE FEES, which will be listed in the Parent’s Guide, issued upon registration. Permission slips for trips will be given with the guidebook. This slip and the activity sheet in the parent handbook will include all necessary information about each trip.

Fast Break Basketball Camp - Ages 7-14 for boys and girls - August (date to be announced), 9:00am-1:00pm. Head Coach -Doug Koban


Fall Programs

Soccer Clinic - For boys and girls. Held in the fall in the Recreation Complex gym.

Intramural Soccer League - In-town leagues are formed for boys and girls combined. 1st - 2nd grade division, 3rd - 4th grade division, 5th - 6th grade division, and 7th - 8th grade division. Games are played on Wed. night and Sat., starting in September on Boro field.

Bomber Football Program - For boys in the 3rd through 8th grade. The Pee Wee squad is for 3rd and 4th graders; the junior squad for 5th and 6th graders; and the senior squad for 7th and 8th graders. Registration will be held in June at the Bomber Hut. For more information, please call 201-796-4447.


Programs held more than one season

Crafts - Students make various craft projects. Held evenings at the Recreation Complex 6:00pm. Day and date to be announced. Two 10-week sessions- Spring and Fall.

After School Program - Sept. - June from 3:30pm - 6:00pm Mon. - Fri. for those parents who work. Program will provide games, crafts, and study time. Indoor and outdoor activities. One certified teacher and 4 aides are on duty each day. The program follows the EP grammar school calendar. A monthly fee will be charged.

Winter Programs

Wrestling - Starts in Dec. for 2nd - 8th grade boys & girls. Practices held on Mon., Tues., and Thurs. in the high school girl’s gym. The art of wrestling is taught by a qualified coaching staff. Divisions into weight classes, age groups, and wrestling ability. The matches are held on Sat. mornings starting in Jan. against league teams from neighboring towns. Tournaments are held throughout the season concluding with a District and Regional Tournament at the end of the season. Boys can also compete and state qualifier tournament.

Basketball Clinic - For 1st - 2nd grade boys and girls. Starts in Jan. on Sat. mornings in the Rec. gym. Children are taught the fundamentals of basketball. Date and time to be announced.

Intramural Basketball League - Formed separately for boys and girls 3rd - 4th grade league, 5th - 6th grade league, and 7th - 8th grade league. Games are played in the Recreation Complex.

Basketball Traveling Teams - 3rd - 4th grade, 5th - 6th grade, and 7th - 8th grade separately for both boys and girls. These teams play in leagues and tournaments with neighboring towns.


Spring Programs

Girls' Softball League - From April through July. There will be 4 divisions: Bantams grades 1 - 2, Juniors grades 3 - 4, Preteens grades 5 - 6, and Intermediates grades 7, 8 and 9. There will also be all-star teams - 10 and under, 12 and under, 14 and under, and 18 and under. Registration site and time to be announced. Tennis - Starts in April. Held at high school tennis courts on Saturday afternoons. Qualified instructors teach basics of tennis. Classes start at 3:30pm. This program runs for 8 weeks. Tournament and awards will be held at the end of the season.

Junior League Baseball - Held from April through July. The league consists of 5 divisions: Pee Wees 8 & under; Minors 9 - 10 year olds; Majors 11 & 12 year olds; Junior Babe Ruth to 15 years old; Babe Ruth 16 - 18 year olds. WilIiamsport Little League Baseball - Little League Tee BaIl 5-6 year olds — Jr Development Lg 7-8 year olds — Major Div 9-10 year olds — Major Div 11-12 year olds — Junior Div 13-l4year olds — Senior Div 14-16 year olds. Special Events

Annual Hall of Fame Dinner - The Elmwood Park Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is proud to announce the Annual Hall of Fame Dinner in honor of outstanding athletes, coaches, and others who have made a significant contribution in the field of sports. Honorees will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the All-Sports Dinner. Nominating forms are available at the Municipal Building. Completed nomination forms are to be forwarded to EP Hall of Fame, Municipal Building, Elmwood Park, NJ 07407. You are invited to attend the All-Sports Dinner and share a very special evening in the history of Elmwood Park athletes. Call 201-797-3008 or 201-797-5700 for further details.

Annual Summer Festival - Will be held at Boro field on a Saturday in June (to be announced), starting approximately 9:00am for the Flea Market and 12:00noon for live entertainment. DJ, food, and rides for children. All town residents are welcome.


Senior Activity Center

The Senior Center is open to all Bergen County seniors 60 years of age and over. We serve a hot nutritionally balanced meal daily for a nominal fee Monday - Friday. You must sign up in advance. We also offer educational programs and blood pressure clinics. Check the center calendar for monthly evening parties, bingo parties, Pizza Lunches and Pancake Breakfast, billiards, cards and Bingo everyday.

  • Monday, 10:00am: Line Dance - $1 suggested donation
  • Tuesday & Thursday, 9:00am: Let’s Walk” walking club
  • Wednesday & Friday - 9:30am Exercise w/YMCA Thurs. — 9:30am “Need-L-Wits” needlework group 12:30pm Ceramics - $1.50 suggested donation.

All registrations are held at the Recreation Department during work hours - Mon.-Fri. 10:00am - 4:00pm, also Tues. and Thurs. evenings 7:00pm-8:30pm. All programs must be paid for by check or money order. Make checks payable to Elmwood Park Recreation Department.
